Providence Honors Former Nurse with Scholarship

Local physicians and team members from Providence St. Peter Hospital have raised more than $7,000 for nursing scholarships in memory of Karas Maureen Moore, a former friend and colleague who lost a battle with cancer in the fall of 2003.

Caring for people was Moore's passion and to honor her, co-workers decided to establish a one-time scholarship available to second year nursing students at South Puget Sound Community College. The group's original goal was to raise $2,000; however, the response they received was astounding and to date more than 90 people have made contributions.

"I am simply overjoyed by the generosity and conviction to carry on Karas's passion to help those in need," said Chris Peek, a registered nurse and long-time friend of Moore who is leading the fundraising effort. "This is truly an amazing group of people and our success just proves what you can accomplish when you capture the energy of the human spirit."

According to Peek, eight scholarships have been awarded in the amount of $500 for the fall quarter. Those students receiving scholarships include: Teresa Foster, Michelle Holden, Gayle Kenyon, Angela Brake, Michelle Matlick, Lisa Johnson, Brook Matayoshi, Jean Earls, Carol Seeley and Tammy Bouldin.

"These future nurses ensure that the many miracles provided by medicine will continue for years to come in this wonderful community," Peek said. "Karas and her family have been friends of mine for more than 30 years and I cannot think of a better way to honor such a caring and compassionate person."

Moore who practiced as a nurse for more than 44 years spent close to 30 years working in the Family Birth Center at St. Peter Hospital. A registered nurse who graduated from Broadlawns School of Nursing in Des Moines, Iowa in 1958, Moore was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, respected by her family and co-workers.

Since not all of the funds were used during the fall quarter, additional scholarships will be awarded prior to the winter quarter. Donations towards the scholarship fund are still being accepted and can be sent to Providence St. Peter Foundation, 413 Lilly Road NE, Olympia, WA 98506.
